The Gap We Address
You were trained in your craft. Nobody trained you in the enterprise that carries it.
Most owners reach the top of their profession through technical mastery — as a surgeon, an engineer, a builder, a lawyer, a manufacturer. Then, almost by accident, they find themselves running a company: setting price, hiring leaders, financing growth, deciding what to buy and what to walk away from.
Those are not professional decisions. They are ownership decisions, and they draw on a body of knowledge nobody taught you — how capital behaves, how value compounds, how a business is priced by someone who wants to buy it. The gap is rarely effort or intelligence. It is education.
Modern & Macro closes that gap. We do not sell motivation, accountability calls, or tactical growth hacks. We teach the judgment that governs consequential decisions, and we stay in the room while you make them.
Judgment
Judgment over tactics
Tactics expire. A tactic that worked in one market, one cycle, or one capital structure quietly fails in the next. Judgment is portable — it tells you which decision you are actually facing and what would have to be true for each answer to be right.
Capital
Capital over revenue
Revenue is the most flattering number in the business and the least informative. We work in the language owners are eventually paid in: returns on invested capital, cash conversion, cost of capital, and the spread between them.
Horizon
Decades over quarters
Enterprise value is built by a small number of decisions made correctly over long periods, and destroyed by a small number made carelessly. We plan against the horizon on which ownership actually pays out — including the day you no longer own it.
Ownership
Build the business you would buy
Enterprise value is not created at the moment of sale. Customer concentration, founder dependence, undocumented process — each is a discount an acquirer applies without negotiation, and each is fixable years in advance for a fraction of what it costs at the table.
Core Services
Four ways to work with us.
Open the scope beneath any partnership
Quarterly cadence
Executive Strategy Partnership
A standing strategic counsel for the owner. The room where the consequential decision gets thought through before it gets made.
Scope
- A monthly working session on live decisions, plus availability between sessions when something cannot wait
- Annual strategy formulation: what the firm will pursue, and explicitly what it will decline
- Decision frameworks taught in the moment and left with you, so the next case needs less of us
- A quarterly written read on position, risk concentration, and capital condition
12-month mandate
Strategic Growth Partnership
For firms with a growth decision on the table — a new market, a line extension, an acquisition, a step-change in capacity.
Scope
- Diligence on the growth thesis: where the return actually comes from and what it depends on
- Unit economics and capacity modelling before commitment, not after
- Financing structure — the cost, covenants, and downside of each source of capital considered
- Sequencing and stage gates, with agreed evidence for continuing, pausing, or reversing
Multi-year horizon
Enterprise Value Partnership
Building an enterprise that is valuable independent of its founder, and preparing it for transition, capital, or sale.
Scope
- Valuation drivers and discount factors identified early, while they are still inexpensive to fix
- Reduction of founder dependence: decision rights, management depth, and documented process
- Concentration, contract, and reporting readiness assessed against how an acquirer will examine them
- Transition planning that treats the owner’s position and the family’s interests as part of the problem
One day to six months
Executive Education
Private workshops, seminars, and leadership programmes in capital allocation, strategic planning, and financial literacy.
Scope
- Private workshops on a single subject taken to working depth with your team
- Executive seminars sequenced across a quarter, with applied work between sessions
- Six-month leadership development for the layer beneath the owner
- Closed roundtables for small groups of non-competing owners
Executive Education
Private workshops and seminars for owners and their leadership teams.
Delivered privately to a single company’s leadership, or as a closed seminar for a small group of non-competing owners. No open enrolment, no recordings for sale. Every format uses your numbers and your live decisions as the case material.
Capital allocation
The five uses of a dollar, cost of capital in owner-operated firms, return on incremental invested capital, and the arithmetic of reinvestment.
Leadership development
Building a management layer that can decide without you: delegation of judgment rather than tasks, decision rights, and the standards that make a second line trustworthy.
Strategic planning
Where advantage actually comes from, choosing what not to do, sequencing under constraint, and building a plan that survives contact with a bad quarter.
Decision-making discipline
Base rates, reversibility, pre-mortems, and the small set of biases that reliably cost owners money. Practised on the decisions currently on the table.
Financial literacy for owners
Reading your own statements the way a lender, buyer, or investor reads them. Working capital, cash conversion, unit economics, and the gap between profit and cash.
Enterprise value and transition
What a buyer pays for and what they discount, de-risking founder dependence, and preparing an enterprise — and a family — for a change of hands.
How it is delivered.
Programmes are built from four formats and sized to the group in front of us.
1 day
Private workshop. A single subject taken to working depth with the owner and leadership team. Ends with a decision made or a plan drafted, not a slide deck.
Series
Executive seminar. Four to six sessions across a quarter, sequenced so each builds on the last, with work applied between sessions.
Ongoing
Leadership programme. A six-month curriculum for the layer beneath the owner, designed to move a management team from executing decisions to making them.
Closed
Owners’ roundtable. A small group of non-competing owners, one framework per session, taught against real situations under confidentiality.
Enterprise Statement
The educational and thought leadership platform of Finnávia International Group.
Finnávia International Group holds and operates a portfolio of advisory, investment, and enterprise interests. Modern & Macro is its dedicated teaching arm — the place where the group’s operating standards, allocation discipline, and analytical methods are made available to owners outside the portfolio.
That parentage matters in one specific way: the frameworks we teach are not assembled from business literature. They are the working standards used to evaluate, hold, and improve real enterprises.
A business is not a job with better hours. It is a claim on future cash flows that someone, someday, will price.
Candour. You will hear the assessment, not the comfortable version of it. Confidentiality. Client identities and figures are never used as marketing. Independence. We accept no commissions, referral fees, or product incentives.

FAQs
Common questions from owners.
If yours is not here, ask it directly in the introductory conversation.
How is this different from business coaching?
Coaching works primarily on the owner’s behaviour — accountability, habits, mindset, motivation. We work on the decision itself, using the frameworks a capital allocator would apply. We teach financial and strategic judgment and then use it on live situations in your business. If what you need is encouragement and a weekly check-in, a coach is the better and cheaper answer.
Do you provide investment, legal, tax, or accounting advice?
No. Modern & Macro is an educational and strategic advisory platform. We are not a registered investment adviser, law firm, or accounting practice. Where a decision requires licensed advice, we help you frame the question rigorously and work alongside the professionals who answer it.
What size of business does this suit?
Established owner-operated firms where the founder still makes the consequential decisions and where a wrong call carries real consequence. Below roughly that threshold, the constraint is usually execution rather than judgment, and our work would be premature. We say so directly in the introductory conversation.
Will you tell me what to do?
Only where a decision is genuinely technical and time-critical. Ordinarily we do something more useful and more irritating: we show you the structure of the decision, what would have to be true for each option to be right, and what evidence would settle it. You decide, with better instruments than you had before.
How long does an engagement last?
The Executive Strategy Partnership runs on a quarterly cadence and continues while it is useful. The Strategic Growth Partnership is typically a twelve-month mandate around a specific expansion decision. The Enterprise Value Partnership works on a multi-year horizon toward transition. Education programmes run from a single day to six months.
Can you work with our leadership team rather than just the owner?
Yes, and in most cases it is the better arrangement. Executive Education is designed for exactly that: building a management layer that can reason about capital, strategy, and risk rather than waiting for the owner to do it for them.
Is anything confidential shared or used as marketing?
No. Client identities, figures, and decisions are never used in our writing, case material, or promotion. Our published articles use composite and generic situations only.
What happens in the introductory conversation?
Thirty minutes, no charge and no obligation. You describe the decision or constraint in front of you. We tell you how we would frame it and whether an engagement would improve the outcome. Where the honest answer is that it would not, we say so and suggest what would.
Do you work remotely or in person?
Both. Standing partnerships run largely by video with periodic in-person sessions. Private workshops and leadership programmes are usually delivered on site, since they involve the whole leadership team and real working material.
